1. A Space Between Images

I have always found great excitement in building narratives that lead viewers to glance at what lies beyond human experience. My comics include reptiles, yuppies and mummified fish, and ask what it's like to be in something else's skin. Changing the audience’s self image is fundamental to my work, and while the precision of ink lets me craft clear characters, my work with stages allows for more ambivalence. By designing and performing a show, space is created for the unexpected. In singing and dancing about a snake, the question arises as to who is the snake. Behind the obvious lies a larger, messier, conversation.

With a diverse dynamic of methods - pop music, drawings and stage designs - I try to play with human nature. Feelings of confusion, fascintation and empathy are building-blocks for good stories. By using my hands, voice and body, audiences are invited to experience alien points of view, and to discover characters that are more than what they seem to be on the surface.

If art is a web of fabricated human tradition, I look for moments where over-concentration on one element creates distortion. An installation around the word Snake gives form to a giant terrarium. Fuck Boy becomes a performance about confused young men. By theming characters and narratives with a few words, a constant negotiation emerges with the audience about the definition of said words. Terms like Hot Coal, Scum or Skinny White Male become focal points, and by blurring, something else is revealed. I find my talent in taking complex relations and presenting them in front of an audience, leaving the public to decide what to think.

Bio:

In the past André has worked as a conventional cartoonist, later expanding his interest in semantics and pictographs within the audio-visual department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. During this period he found taking the stage to produce interesting narratives, and has developed his current practice around experimenting with stage design, performance, singing and dancing. He examines the paradoxes that lie between contemporary images, and through his performances, drawings, songs and stages, Chapatte observes subjects related to identity, human relationship to nature, and aspects of western lifestyle are often taken for granted. Captivated by the cognitive space between images, Chapatte searches for new and necessary symbolism, most times by overlapping conflicting ideas or switching-up elements of cultural positioning. He believes new meaning can be found in the friction between cultures, ideas and popular misconceptions, and that the path to enlightenment can be obtained with intelligent entertainment and accessible story-telling.
